The Lie Behind the Promise of Net Neutrality

Much has been made of President Obama’s recent mandate to the FCC to enact regulation that is intended to ensure Net Neutrality. As a network operator, I have a rather unique view into this particular dispute. I’ve lived on the front lines of the battle for years. Organizations such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), who has an excellent record of supporting free speech on the Internet, have lauded Obama’s directive, and popular opinion seems to be clearly in favor of the move, aided by a brilliant propaganda campaign by those who stand to gain financially. On it’s face, enacting regulation to ensure a free and open Internet seems like it would be a great thing. Dive a little deeper into the proposed rules, however, and you will find that this initiative is largely driven by cronyism, and that there are unintended side effects that could forever change the Internet’s status as forum for free and open communication.
