We are planning to visit DC this year, maybe in July. We have never been there before. I wonder if anyone familiar with the area could advise us on getting a motel. I am considering getting one in Arlington or Alexandria. Does anyone know of any advantages or disadvantages of either place or is there another area or specific motel you would recommend? We don't want to spend a lot of money.

I'd recommend getting a hotel that is near a subway entrance.

The most inexpensive motel/hotel we found was on Glebe Road/395, the SW corner. However, the smartest would be to find a hotel/motel close to the metro. Metro makes life much easier. No hassles with parking, etc. . There is a TON to do in Washington DC. Mt. Vernon is 15 miles south going on beautiful Mt. Vernon pkwy(?) That could easily be a leisurely day trip, especially if you have children.
Museums in DC will take forever. Gaithersburg, MD has Bro. Libby's church. It is about 20 miles north on 270, I believe. Maybe 8 miles north of the Beltway out there?
Then there is the Custis/Lee mansion smack in the middle of Arlington Cemetery (where my wife's father was buried early last year).
I suppose you could Google "Inexpensive hotels in Arlington/Alexandria area. Just make sure it is walking distance from the metro.
Brochures will tell you the million things do to there.
