My pastor recently did a Bible study, where he discussed the three different spirits we could be possessed by.
God - In other words, the Holy Ghost. Obviously, this is our ultimate goal as Christians.
Satan - Demonic spirits in general. These can be cast out, but if the Holy Spirit doesn't replace that demonic one, then they will end up with 7 worse than they had before.
Self - The worst spirit to be possessed of, because it cannot be cast out. This is when the Bible says they were turned to their own lusts. They become possessed by their own spirit of self.
I'm paraphrasing his words a bit, as I don't recall the specifics of his notes, but that's essentially how he put it.
