Oh how well do I know! My 16 year old son was told he has a rebellious spirit because of his beard. He ask where did that idea come from and the only answer he got was in relationship to the 60s hippie thing. His response was the classic "well Jesus must a been a rebellious hippie".

I beleive they mean well. I've been in / around UPC my whole life. With several close family members being pastors. However the forceful policing of these standard have caused more than a few to leave. And that has been discussed here enough.

Serious question though.

Would it be too far of a stretch to think that a 16 year old hay have a rebellious spirit if he grows up in a church environment where no one has a beard and then he decides to grow his beard?

Or did the man-made rule create an environment for a rebellion that didn't have to happen in the first place?

This reminds me of the scripture warning parents to not provoke their children to anger and the scripture that warns married couples to not withhold themselves from each other.

He actually ask permission from me and his mother if he could have a beard. We agreed that he could. IMO they should a come to his parents

What about the other questions.

Could man-made, extra-biblical, unbiblical teachings actually set the questioning Christian up for failure-- making that person into a rebellious person, therefore making that person actually a person in sin?

Well I'll answer best I can with only my experience. I'm 43 grew up in one of the biggest and best UPC churches of Mississippi in the 80s youth group of well over 120! Some names from this group easily recognized if you been around UPC in the south

I'm familiar with very little in MS.

I had a friendly relationship with Pastor Ramsey (down in Pascagoula) and his son for a brief amount of time. I think I lived down on the coast when Juanita Bynum visited the Woodlawn church. This would have been the early 2000's.
