Re: Hurricane Harvey - Texas Coast
Saw this in another forum:

From someone who has a great perspective....
Hundreds and hundreds of small boats pulled by countless pickups and SUVs from across the South are headed for Houston. Almost all of them driven by men. They're using their own property, sacrificing their own time, spending their own money, and risking their own lives for one reason: to help total strangers in desperate need.
Most of them are by themselves. Most are dressed like the redneck duck hunters and bass fisherman they are. Many are veterans. Most are wearing well-used gimme-hats, t-shirts, and jeans; and there's a preponderance of camo. Most are probably gun owners, and most probably voted for Trump.
These are the people the Left loves to hate, the ones Maddow mocks. The ones Maher and Olbermann just *know* they're so much better than.
These are The Quiet Ones. They don't wear masks and tear down statues. They don't, as a rule, march and demonstrate. And most have probably never been in a Whole Foods.
But they'll spend the next several days wading in cold, dirty water; dodging gators and water moccasins and fire ants; eating whatever meager rations are available; and sleeping wherever they can in dirty, damp clothes. Their reward is the tears and the hugs and the smiles from the terrified people they help. They'll deliver one boatload, and then go back for more.
When disaster strikes, it's what men do. Real men. Heroic men. American men. And then they'll knock back a few shots, or a few beers with like-minded men they've never met before, and talk about fish, or ten-point bucks, or the benefits of hollow-point ammo, or their F-150.
And the next time they hear someone talk about "the patriarchy", or "male privilege", they'll snort, turn off the TV and go to bed.
In the meantime, they'll likely be up again before dawn. To do it again. Until the helpless are rescued. And the work's done.
They're unlikely to be reimbursed. There won't be medals. They won't care. They're heroes. And it's what heroes do.

That's cute. Racism isn't big here in Houston. This isn't NOLA.

Seating almost 17K people does not equate to housing the same. These are not fold up chairs that can be moved out of the way.
Lakewood opened yesterday, I think. They needed time to gather staff and supplies. It was reported that the mayor was informed that Lakewood would open after other shelters were filled.
Anyway, people love to hate Osteen.

Problem was the church originally claimed it was flooded. Some people walked to the church, took video, and posted it on YouTube, showing that it was neither flooded nor in danger of being flooded.
That's when it started, and he fumbled the ball twice in response. It would have made far more sense to just immediately open the building as a shelter prior to the storm hitting. Any damage to the facility by storm refugees would have been easily made up for in both insurance payouts and increased donations. He could have been a hero, now he's just another money grubbing TV preacher, rich white elitist snob, in the eyes of millions of people.
In other news, Mattress Mack opened Gallery Furniture as a shelter almost immediately, on his own initiative. I'd buy a couch from him just for that.

You're Fake News!
The water was a foot below the flood gates. Just because the front of the building was accessible doesn't not mean that there was no flooding. I saw pics and video posted by a contractor that was cleaning up the mess.
Osteen is all those things to the people that already hate him. The people that started this ruckus are people that already hated him. Probably atheists anyway. One of the guys that showed up at Lakewood is a Romans 1 reprobate, and we know how much they just looove the church.

I'm no fan of Osteen. Never thought I'd see the day where I'm defending him.

Re: Hurricane Harvey - Texas Coast
Why aren't there any celebrities helping out, like the usually do when there's a big crisis? Why is it the only the ordinary joe that is helping out their neighbors? Usually you hear about celebrities donating money, or giving "charity" concerts to raise money to help victims. Are they that hateful and spiteful of Trump and conservatives, where they don't want anything good to be said about Trump, that they would withhold help in this great time of need? Or are they helping out, but I don't hear about since I don't watch the news?
Just something that have me feeling a bit curious...

Many celebrities have raised money or donated their own.

Re: Hurricane Harvey - Texas Coast
Just heard last night how J.J. Watt, (linebacker Houston Texans), raised 10 million dollars already for flood victims. The first 100k he kicked in himself. Started putting the money to work already as of yesterday.
