I didn’t misquote. I asked what it means. I quoted correctly.
Not to be addicted/an alcoholic.

To be given (over) to something means that it has control over you.

Re: Wine vs Grape Juice

When he came eating and drinking, I think it was referring to their lack of fasting with the Jews.

And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.

Now, as jediwill pointed out, we have another quote:

. . . not given to MUCH wine . . .

What does this mean?

More importantly, what do the two quotes mean in relation to one another?

Sean, come join me on the other side of the cross. I’m on the “early church” side now.

No sir. They don’t mean the same thing. One means more of the same thing. One is “given to wine”, the other is “given to much wine”. One is a higher standard than the other.

2] A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
[3] Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
[4] One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
[5] (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
[6] Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
[7] Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
[8] Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine . . .
