We have made a mess that is not easily fixed... the first thing to do is plug the leak and then worry about amnesty for the people who are already here (Especially the ones who have been here for 30 years and now have kids who ARE citizens).

What if were looking at it like this.

Lets say a guy commits a crime.

Nobody catches him (although to be a fair analogy he would have to continue committing the crime)

And then... when they finally catch him... he has settled down... he has a family & kids etc.

Should we execute the punishment of that crime?

I agree... although I'm not a fan of amnesty. I would be willing to allow them to stay long enough to strive for their citizenship -- and have it sort of a probation type thing where if they aren't working toward their citizenship, then they are expelled. And I would make citizenship much harder than what it is now. For instance, in order to get a citizenship in Mexico you have to be proficient in Spanish (or bribery) -- why should the US be any different?

I'm not saying that we don't have to fix the illegal problem... I know if I just went and moved to Ireland they would kick me out after about 6 months and not look the other way like we do here (where cops do not even report illegals to INS and just write them a traffic ticket and send them on their way).

Just plug the leak first...

nope - there is no excuse for the crime

the punishment should fit the crime...

someone who stole or murdered someone - should be treated differently than the man who brought his family across a border for the hopes of a better life, an education and healthcare.

how about for every illegal we allow in, we export one lazy welfare recepient?

not all welfare repients are lazy good for nothings, but many are...

We don't allow any illegals in.

They come in illegally.
