So, here's a theory:
Common cold virus is genetically modified as tailor-made race specific bioweapon designed to kill Chinese/Asian males. Get's released in Wuhan, China (site of a level-4 Chinese bioweapons research lab) but does not quite perform as expected. It was designed to damage Chinese military capability including by crashing their economy due to export failures and quarantines etc. Chinese response inbound.
