Sometimes I think they're abrasive, defensive, or nasty because of how WE Apostolics present the Truth. Who's going to listen to someone that's being cocky, or stern without any compassion on their salvation or soul.
I generally try to find some common ground and build on that. There are some things we'll agree with Trinitarians on, so I try to start there. Once I've won them (for the lack of a better word), I try to ease in some doctrinal points they're missing.
We can't reach someone we've offended. I've never seen it happen.
