Re: How Modernized Is Apostolic?

I think we should get rid of the word "Apostolic" as far as identifying Churches. I dont think the Apostles would have wanted Churches THEY FOUNDED to be named after themselves.

They would have been mortified had someone tried to do that in their time.

Altho it certainly would be valid for a group or movement or person to say they follow the Apostles doctrine as long as they understand the Apostles doctrine is the doctrine of Christ.

Re: How Modernized Is Apostolic?

I was referring to "Apostolic" as in referencing the Oneness of God, the Acts 2:38 salvation message, living a life of holiness, and generally following the Apostles' doctrine.

The elders I know in the faith don't usually say "apostolic" when describing their beliefs, they typically say "holiness" instead.

Gino Jennings, who has many differing views that many self-identifying Apostolics, only wants to be called holiness. He says all denominational names have been blurred by people not living true Biblical lifestyles.

Re: How Modernized Is Apostolic?

Those at the Azusa Street Revival did not teach Oneness, did they? They taught baptism in the name of Jesus, but they still upheld a Trinitarian view of God, right?

But yet they called themselves Apostolic, correct?

Re: How Modernized Is Apostolic?

My maternal grandmother, who was raised Roman Catholic and primarily in their schools, was quite intrigued when I started attending an Apostolic church with my father.

She broke up the syllables within "Apostolic" differently than we do. We say Ap-o-stol-ic and she would say A-pos-to-lic. I'm not too well-read on my Catholicism history, but apparently where she came from they spoke of the Catholic Church and their adherents as being A-pos-to-lic.

Just a little interesting tidbit.

Yes. This happens evidently. I was talking to a Catholic acquaintance and when I told him I was Apostolic he got excited. He thought I must be like the Catholic Church.

My grandmother was Catholic in many ways until her dying day. Over the years, after attending different Nazarene, Baptist, and Presbyterian churches, she left the thought of a purgatory behind her. She knew that didn't exist.

For years, however, she was still big on praying to Mary, and she did daily ritualistic Hail Mary's. She eventually saw that our prayers could go directly to Jesus, and that He alone was all that we needed.

That’s wonderful. Many Apostolics believe everything has to go through the pastor. But they criticize the Catholic for their belief in the pope.

Re: How Modernized Is Apostolic?

Pentecostal is used by a lot of churches, including trinitarians and those who are partial birthers.

Apostolic is used by the Catholic Church and others who may be trinitarian.

So what do we call ourselves?

Well, it gets a little sticky then, doesn't it?

I've heard Apostolics call themselves by a few different names/phrases, among them:
Apostolic (naturally)
Apostolic Pentecostal
Apostolic Holiness (sometimes reversed)
Jesus Name
Jesus Name Apostolic
Jesus Name Holiness
Holiness
One God Apostolic
