I was raised near Chicago and live in black neighborhoods and attended mostly black schools. It never bothered me to be around people of other races because it was a part of life....you know, same people just different color.

I have attended black churches and have many black friends. We are open and honest enough with one another that there are times we discuss our ethnic differences and even joke about it. We aren't afraid to speak about 'white' or 'black' to each other cause that's what we are.

But I have noticed something. There are people who are offended at my speaking about someone as 'black'. Someone, help me understand this.

I mean, I'm white. I don't mind someone calling me 'white' instead of 'European', 'Caucasian', or 'Anglo' or whatever. I'm white. Nothing I can do about it as I don't tan or stay in the sun too long.

I know that black people have not been treated well, and some of that still goes on in certain areas of the US, and that's a bad thing that needs to stop yesterday, and all through the years, they have been called 'names' to single out their ethnicity, some which are not desirable.

In the world of political correctness, it seems that the description changes so it's less offensive.

"Colored" refers to the 60's when they were made to ride on the back of the bus, so we can't use that anymore.

The N word was used in a derrogatory manner and shouldn't be used for anyone of any race. That's just a nasty word to me, but believe it or not, it's acceptable by black folks in certain areas, and they call themselves that. Whatever. I won't go there.

"Afro" or "African-American" is what some use to describe them, but I don't like that and I have heard some black folks offended at that because "African" makes them seem like natives in loincloths or something. And I don't hear whites wanting to be called 'German-American' or 'Russian-American' or any combination of 'white' countries.

"People of Color" is another one I think just reeks of being overly politically correct. It's like I'm trying to hard not to be offensive that I have to make up something that 'sounds really nice and sweet' so they don't think I'm racist or something.

"Black" is what I use because I see it as less offensive without coming across as overly politically correct, however, it's still offensive to some in certain areas. I'm not sure why, but there are people that I can't even talk to about ethnic differences because they think I'm forming stereotypes or something against them. That's just not the case. I feel that we are free to discuss things without fear of prejudice.

Just like there are differences in men and women, there are differences in black and white. I'm not afraid to speak about male issues from my POV, so why do I feel I have to be so careful when speaking about black issues from my POV?

Anyway, I won't be on until later tonight as I have to leave for work, but I'm honestly wanting some input on this subject by other white folks, the hispanics as well as black folks on this forum. I love you all, even if you are purple folks.
I use the term "black" even when in conversations with blacks. I do it because I don't believe in hyphenated Americans.

He wants to be among those who cause the downfall of America! He promotes division and it is well known that a nation divided against itself will not stand.

I remember all too well the culture shock when I moved to the Memphis TN area having been raised in a small town in northcentral Wisconsin. There just weren't and still aren't very many blacks in this area unless you go to bigger cities. So Memphis was quite the shock as I got my first real dose of racism and prejudice at its worst.

I remember getting wrote up at work for using a term that was considered offensive to my black co-worker. A term that I had grown up using and had no idea it had "racial" meanings attached. When I tried to explain that I wasn't raised with the term carrying that meaning, they didn't believe that I hadn't discovered differently in the few years I had been in Memphis. I was accused of being racist and wrote up. Even though my supervisor was a black woman that I had grown very close to. Higher officials did the write up in spite of her coming to my defense.

Probably one of my best memories of all is the time I ran out of gas on Interstate 240 in the Frayser area of Memphis. Those that know the area will probably cringe a bit. I was about to start walking to the gas station a couple miles down the road when a black man pulled up. He offered to take me to the gas station so I climbed in. (I know, I know...stupid thing to do and color definitely isn't the reason why!). He took me to the station and proceeded to fill my gas can with his own money while I waited in the car. A white man pulled up to the pump on the opposite side and while he pumped his gas he glared back and forth at me and then at the black man I was obviously with. I feared he was going to start a fight and silently prayed he'd leave my help alone! Ultimately he took me back to my car, poured gas in the tank and saved some for the carburator (older car - no injectors). He made sure it started and made sure I made it to the station to fill up. Then he left.
While many criticized me for this, there were others that said God sent me a black angel.

Anyway, as for the "black" word, I have yet to talk to anyone personally that finds it offensive and I obviously use the term. But if someone had a problem with it I'd simply apologize...what else can one do? Things have just gotten too crazy!

Black church? I had never seen a building painted that color.

I see no color. I thank Jesus for allowing me some years back to sit under a predominantly 'black' church. The Bishop took me under his wing, and showed me wonders in ministry such as I had never knwon before.

We have allowed color to blind us. This is what sickens me. If I am sick, I really don't care what color the preacher is, so long as he is Apostolic, let him pray.

When did you live in Memphis? We were there from 1980-1984.

LOL! No, I don't think you know me and no, I don't believe you've asked me this before.

I barely knew Bro. Luther but do remember visiting the church on Macon Rd. I always attended the Millington church, under the late pastor Hazel Simpson and the present pastor Travis Sheppard.
