Having enough, taking care of the basic needs of the family [food, clothing & shelter] is something that even Christ promoted when he called men of God and ministry to take care of their families. He thought so much of this that he said those that don't are worse than thieves and infidels.

There is a scripture that for years I didn't understand then meaning but I understand now through watching it happen: The love of money is the root of all evil. This statement really isn't about the rich. It is about the poor that want others to think they are rich. They live beyond their means, dress beyond their means, spend every dime on things that do not satisfy and have a sense of entitlement. The world, relatives, friends owe them something and they hoard up every ill-gotten gain, and poor-mouth until their needs get met by others. They make bills they have no intention of paying, and suck everyone dry around them.

When the Bible talks about the poor being with us always it is talking about multi-generations of families who live out the lifestyles they have been taught to live; not valuing education, having no work ethics, living for the future world by neglecting their responsibilites to their lives and families in this world. Living like vagabonds and having haughty spirits thinking they are so much better than others because they give every dime to the church, and every waking hour to doing church work, to the neglect of relaionships, and responsibility for their families, and even to themselves.

I have seen this played out time and again. And then to brag on this forum that we are not like Paula and Randy White who have everything and get caught up in things...lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life. We fool ourselves don't we?

Something to chew on, and think about.

You have a good point. Years ago, we had an evangelist preach for us and from the pulpit he whined about how he and his wife didn't have money to go anywhere for their anniversary. I was shocked! I wrote his check every week and it was for a handsome amount. I thought it was a shame that he would get in a man's pulpit and whine about money. It almost sounded like he wasn't get paid enough at our church. Our church gave he and his wife enough money to pay off their credit card debt (and he did) but then he turned around and went to General Conference and charged everything on a credit card. How dumb is that?
