We recently had such a service at our church. It was very moving and touching. Each of the "elders" or "pillars" were escorted into the sanctuary while the choir sang a fabulous rendition of "Battle Hymn of the Republic". Each of them were escorted by a young person. The elders were all seated in the front rows on one side of the church and the young people that escorted them were seated across the aisle. We had a piano down on the floor off the platform and reminiscent of the "olden days" when everyone went on the platform for song service, all the elders that wanted to and were able gathered around the piano and led the congregation in the "old" hymns. It was a very touching part of the service. One of the ladies sat by the piano and played her accordian and another man played his old bass fiddle. There was a power point presentation with pictures (young then older) of each of them. Pastor's message appreciated the elders and also spoke directly to the young people about respecting them - as well as who would step up and take their place. Each of the elders were given a memento of the service. If you have people who have been a part of your congregation for many years, (or even if not in your congregation for the entire time - but have served the Lord for a long time) I think it would be nice for the pastor to go to their home and "interview" them about their memories of the church through the years. Have someone set up a video camera. Then take all the interviews and edit it into a nice video presentation along with the powerpoint.

I'm thankful for the "elders" in my life - they have walked the walk and shown by example what true Christianity is!

God bless you for honoring our heritage!
