Not to make more excuses for my poor use of the English language, but I believe that the word, "data" needs to be officially redefined as "sometimes singular", based on the meaning the word has taken on in the last 40-50 years... anyone want to sign my petition?

A byte is 8 bits. A bit would be the smallest particle of data that you can get to, being either a "1" or a "0".

I was thinking the same thing... that's why I posted my comment about Luke Skywalker and Han Solo.
