His church that was once 300 dwindled to less than 30 in ten years. Although I hadn't attended in that ten years, when the new pastor took over and I was in the area for a visit, I knew everyone there, no exception. There had been no growth at all.
That same church has now grown to over 100 in two years. They continue to grow and the church is doing terrific.
The point is, the pastor had nothing to fear by 'his people' visiting other churches, however, he was afraid that they would find better pastures elsewhere, and couldn't afford that. It cost him in the end. He now realizes how wrong he was and runs his current church quite differently.
