It gets very interesting at times. Following the Amish shooting "reporters" were on scene with live coverage.

When you enter the pin # it automatically places you on mute. Sometimes there are hundreds "online" at once. Anyone canturn off mute and speak (in PA. Dutch/German) but they question all new voices and you must answer questions to verify who you are or you could be banned.

Anything. Including some approved Amish/Mennonite wedding services. Last night one thread had live coverage of a benefit auction about an hour from my house. The auctioneer was mic'ed directly into a phone line for clarity.

Early in the mornings there are more UltraCon Amish on who only have phones in the shop or barn. The more liberal ones (mostly Mennonite) who have cell phone or house phones will use the speaker feature and it sounds like a radio talk show in their homes. LOL!

ONE OF THE RULES Women speaking "should be kept to a minimum" except for the ladies chat lines. BUT! one can hear the wives telling their husbands what to say in the background.

Are you saying that the Amish and the OOM don't believe that if you leave you will be doomed for hell? Or did I read that wrong?

If they don't believe that leaving will doom you, then what is the incentive to people to stay?

the sad thing is that because I have left the UPC, I have many friends who still love me and I don't doubt that for a minute, but they are convinced that they will not see me in heaven. I am just as convinced that the opposite is true

Funny - the bolded part of your question! Why do you serve the Lord as you do? Why do you stay? Many Amish love the conservative Christian lifestyle... I can honestly say I did not hate it in it's entirity. There are many, many positives.

The fact is some likely do feel one will be lost for leaving, but many do not.

It would depend at least somewhat whether they have left the church for another similar plain church, or left for a very liberal church, or left the Christian faith entirely.

Margie, I am sorry about your UPC experience. I assure you I had no visions of Dante's Inferno after meeting you and Walt!

I love you both, and God bless you!

This is a little nuance not covered by the books. What ends up being different?

It's very personal. I still feel naked.

This is pretty much true with me too. I have some resentment and anger towards preachers in the older generation who *could* have helped me out...and didn't. So, when I see a repeat of that certain spirit in certain posters, I can get kind of "in your face" because I see and know firsthand the devastation it creates.

It must be very similar to the difference between some UPC'ers. Some lived this hell-fire fear and others come out practically unscathed. I think it is both who the person was around and the level of sensitivity a person may have towards negative preaching/teaching on a regular basis. My husband was not effected as extremely as I was.

None of us could speak the PA Dutch bit except you. I'm glad you're keeping up with it. You should teach it to your girls.
