Light doctrine I *think* is being saved by what "Light" you've seen. Like someone who's only been taught being baptized in the titles would be saved because they were faithful to what they knew.

Okay -- thanks... granted, it's just informational for me so I can follow the 'conversation'.

: Where are all the Acts 2:38 folks (3-steppers)??

generation that I have lived to see the truth of the Acts 2:38 message
proved!
I believe with all my heart the story of how my paternal grandmother, who
was a devout Methodist, walking in all the light she knew, heard the message
of Acts 2:38, checked it out in the Word, believed and obeyed it. My late
father who heard this message, along with my mother, also heard, believed
and obeyed this message, That was in the mid-30's and in the late 1950's,
I also received the Holy Spirit that they had received earlier.
Our children, who were born from 1960 until 1975, also have all believed and
obeyed this message and all of our grandchildren who are old enough to
understand have also believed and obeyed. All are active in church and the
two eldest are in the ministry. The oldest grandson is a licensed minister of
this gospel and his brother three years younger, will be licensed shortly.
Glory, glory, hallelujah, HIS TRUTH is marching ON and ON and ON........!!
Thank you, Lord Jesus! I would highly recommend it to anyone! God is NOT
the author of confusion!
Incidentally, I had never heard of 3-stepper until this forum. Who started
labeling??

I think this is an excellent example of the "Light Doctrine." And the fact that it originally dates back to around 1927 (I think) is helpful for showing how these folks were thinking.

1. Among Apostolic ministers, teachers, etc. there are differences of opinion on how and when a person is justified/saved/born again. Some believe a person is saved when he/she turns to God in faith and repentance. Others believe a person is not saved until after water baptism and Holy Spirit baptism. Those who believe a person is saved at faith/repentance are called "one-steppers" and those who believe salvation happens after water and Spirit baptism are called "three-steppers." It seems that these are terms we use on forums and not actual terms people usually go by.
When the UPC was formed in 1945, two organizations came together. One was the PCI (Pentecostal Church Incorporated) and the other was the PAJC (Pentecostal Assemblies of Jesus Christ). Many (I don't think anyone really knows how many) in the PCI fell into what we would call "one-stepper" category and many (I don't think anybody really knows how many) in the PAJC fell into what we would call the "three-stepper" category.
So on these forums we use terms like "PCI" and "one-stepper" to define one group and "PAJC" or "three-stepper" to define another group. Some times the terms are used in a derogatory manner.
2. Light doctrine?
There are a couple of ways "Light Doctrine" is used.
Some use it to designate a belief that a person is saved (currently and in this life) by walking in all the light that he/she has received. Thus, a person like Martin Luther or a person like Charles Wesley is considered saved because, even though they were not baptized in Jesus' name or baptized in the Holy Spirit, they lived up to all they knew. Also, according to some, a trinitarian is saved if he/she is walking in all the light they have but if they hear about baptism in Jesus' name and do not accept it, their light becomes darkness and they are now lost.
Another version of the Light Doctrine which is quite prevalent among ministers who came from ABI or were influenced by teachers such as G.T. Haywood, F.E. Curts, and S.G. Norris is that a person is not really saved or a child of God and will not be in the rapture or first resurrection if they have not completed all three steps outlined in Acts 2:38. However, there is a second resurrection and all those who have walked in whatever light they had will be given eternal life at that second resurrection.

That's some excellent background material, Sam. And for those who hesitate at the labeling (I know I do) it generally follows old time patterns and practices. The "One Stepper" and "Two Stepper" tags were just a sort of short hand for messily lumping a very broad sperctrum of beliefs into two easily identifiable catagories.
One should not use those labels unless it is understood that the terms are very loose and don't really do any justice to either sides teachings.
You've reminded me of a chorus:
I’M GOING UP A flat
I’m going up, I’m going up
I’m going up in the first resurrection.
I’m going up, I’m going up
I’m going up to meet the Lord.
They’ll be coming from the East,
Coming from the West,
Coming from the North,
They’ll be coming from the South.
I’m going up, I’m going up
I’m going up to meet the Lord.
