Entertaining angels...

As I was preparing an early supper, this verse came to mind...

Heb 13:2

2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.
KJV

I know we are a people which believe in angelic visitation, but are we careful to recognize an angel when they are not arrayed in white?!

Certainly, I see an angel everytime I look in the mirror, but aside from that, I feel compelled to ask myself if I would recognize an angel in my presence?!

Could it be the slow-poke driver that I rant about is an angel preventing me from an unseen danger ahead?!

Or how about a stranger...do I turn away or offer a smile and a helping hand if it is needed?!

My dad used to tell about my heathen grandfather...in his youth he was lost in the woods, frightened, and unable to find his way out.

A man suddenly appeared and said that he would lead the way. As they got to the clearing, he turned to thank the stranger, but he was gone.

Though my grandfather was indeed a heathen, he always believed that it was an angel which helped him that day.

Would we be able to receive a word from a child?!

Dottie Rambo tells of the time when they were traveling almost nonstop...Reba was just a young'un.

Exhausted beyond belief, they were sitting on the platform...Dottie, Buck, and Reba, while the pastor was giving them a glorious introduction.

As she listened to him, she thought, "Lord, these people have no idea how tired I am...and would they care if they knew?! Lord, I wonder...do you even care?!"

All at once, a beautiful little girl with long blonde curls came running down the aisle, ran up on the platform, and jumped onto Dottie's lap.

She drew back and looked at the child, as she said to Dottie, "The Lord sent me to tell you that HE sees how weary you are, and HE knows what you are going through, and HE loves you!!"

And then she ran back up the aisle...

Dottie leaned over to Reba, and whispered, "Did you see that child on my lap?!"

Thinking her momma had lost it, she repeatedly said that she hadn't, and then it finally sank in to Dottie that it was an angel which had ministered to her.

It is glorious when an angel comes into our presence...can we see them and recognize them for what they are?!

I think of this scripture often, usually when I am debating whether or not to offer assistance to someone who is begging. It usually results in me giving something, even if I do think I am being scammed. I just don't want to be accountable for making a bad judgement call. I usually console myself by thinking, even if they were taking advantage of me, I know that I did the right thing.

But your story made me remember my great-grandmother talking about a time when she was driving home on a country road after church one night.

The fog had come in very heavy, and she could not even see the lines on the road. She was driving very slowly with her car door open a little so she could look down and see the road as she was driving, and she was terrified that she was going to wind up in a wreck.

All of the sudden a car pulled up beside her, and a young man said through the window, "follow me, I will lead you home". She followed him several miles, and as soon as they got up to some lights, close to her home, all of the sudden the car was gone. Disappeared in to thin air.

She was convinced that it was an angel, and knowing her, I am fairly convinced as well.

What a great story!!

I am convinced these events are memorials...not just for the individual, but for those who remain when they are gone.

As in the case of my grandfather, who never came to the Lord...he wanted no part of God, but remembered that incident and called it as being from God.

Though he didn't realize it, it was a memorial in his life, and in mine, that lo these many years since it first happened, I am reciting it here.

I agree, completely. These events that are handed down as reminders to us of the greatness and faithfulness of God, come in very handy at our low moments.

At least for me, when I think back to how God has been there for my family time and time again over the years, it hard to deny his faithfulness!
