Re: Cosmetic Surgery? yes or no
I haven't read thru this whole thread, but about dropped my teeth when I saw it here.
We had a HUGE discussion about this very subject 2 weeks ago in my SS class - and I do not attend an Apostolic church.
I found it amazing that there were a couple of people in the class (including the pastor's wife) who absolutely believed that to have cosmetic surgery of any kind (not just facial, but also things like breast enhancements or reductions, liposuction, etc.) was sin.
Their reasoning was that to have surgery was to try to change how God had made you and that that was insulting to God. Hello?? My answer to that was that if changing how God made you was sin, then they would need to be giving up their make-up because that's what make-up does. Of course that wasn't an answer anyone was going to accept!
They then said that the reason it was sin was because the great cost that you had to pay for surgery could be better used to feed the poor, spread the Gospel, take care of orphans and widows, etc. Again, I said to them that the $20-50 that some of spend a year on make-up could feed a family in Africa for over a month. Doesn't that make make-up a sin also if you are using the same line of reasoning?
My contention is that it is NOT sin. It might be a sign of someone who has some inferiority issues. If that's the case, then let's help them with them. Let's not knock them even further down by telling them that what they're doing is sin when there is nothing to really back that up. Let's show compassion and love, not judgement.
