Seems to me it is a product of what was tolerated ... albeit kicking and screaming.

My take, just as an observer ,not as an Admin. Both sides have claimed the board was this or that...liberals have claimed the board was slanted towards cons and cons say it was slanted towards libs...
The Libs were happy to remain mostly....other than being banned and the Cons just leave of their own volition. If it is true what StMatt said that what makes the direction here go towards liberal are the members then the truth is what made this board liberal (speaking rhetorically because it is NOT liberal) was the CONS all jumping ship.
Reminds me of what happens with the UPC. Sure it was ok to bash and trash Paula White and others, but if you dare touch one of theirs it's preacher bashing. Sadly this is a symptom...in my opinion, of Ultra Conservativism...not of being conservative. Being an Ultra Con is not really about standards or salvational doctrines, but about control. Ultra Liberalism is that way too.
Liberals are liberal in their doctrine but can tolerate others and embrace them.
Moderates are wishy washy in their doctrinal views and like a labrador retriever just want to please everyone doctrinally.
Cons are conservative in their views but don't cast away fellowship and friendships over doctrines
