Hair tonic, I haven't heard that term for a few years.
As a teenager in the nineteen fifties we used Brylcreem (spelling) which was white and "a little dab'll do ya" was the ad. Or we used "hair oil" which was more of a liquid. Or we used Vaseline petroleum jelly. Hair was greased, combed, and then a "wave" or "roll" was formed in the front. The sides were combed back to form what was called a duck tail (or abbreviated "da" in the back."
