I had a dog that would go crazy when the squirrels would walk on the power line over head.
One day a squirrel fell out on the road dead and I picked him up.
He was still warm and I propped him up on the Pickett fence and then called the dog.
My dog saw the squirrel, let out a spooked woof and ran away!
Stupid dog.

They never, ever leave their little territory. There's a great big world out here and they don't know a thing about it because they stay holed up in their little area. Kinda sad.

According to my mom...the red squirrls are taking over and the grey's are dying out...don't know if that is so...I have one grey that lives across the street...his tail is huge!!!

I remember growing up in East Texas and my kinfolk would hunt and eat squirrels. They would fry them or put them in dumplings.
Squirrels, deer, rabbit and wild pigs were common place on our table. Did any of you ever eat squirrel meat?

Squirrel is one of my favorite foods. Young squirrel, deep fried, with eggs, and cathead biscuits and gravy is great! Better than chicken.
Blessings, Rhoni

You must be from the south, Rhoni. Cathead biscuits with gravy was what my auntie use to cook on Sunday mornings to get me out of bed so I would go to church...good memories and GOOD biscuits!

Actually, we ate alot of squirrel - and rabbit, pheasant, venison, and bear when we were kids. We also ate SOME possum - yuck! Not good stuff. We ate frog legs anytime my dad went fishing and came upon some big old bullfrogs. In the fish line, we usually had walleye. Once a year dad would go to Michigan and fish for Coho. And smelt. We'd get that once a year, too. I'm not a big fan of fish of any kind, so none of those were my favorites.
I really never liked squirrel or rabbit. I LOVE pheasant and venison. Bear's not great either, but cooked right, it's tolerable once in a great while.
And ONCE my dad got ahold of some walrus that a friend brought him. It really wasn't all that horrible.

I take it you're not from the south, Margie? I never thought of eating bears or walruses. You don't see many of those where I grew up. Thanks for sharing. By the way, where did you grow up?
