Re: Ice Cream/Toppings

I'm moving this thread temporarily for those who don't know we have a section for recipes.

Thought this one would be fun since it is summer time.

Re: Ice Cream/Toppings

It's interesting to find this thread on here today. I spent about 10 minutes at Kroger's today checking out a homemade ice cream maker. I'm still considering buying one. My kids have never ever tasted homemade ice cream, so I think that would be fun.

Thanks for bringing it to the front like this, Esther. Now I know I have to go and get it!

I know! Isn't that the saddest thing you've ever heard??

I'm seriously thinking that I have to go and buy that ice cream maker. It occured to me today that I am on the way to sending my baby off to college and I've never given him homemade ice cream! What kind of a mom is that???

Yep, that's got to change!

Margie I think that is UnAmerican not to ever had homemade ice cream!

Just be glad you don't have to hand crank it like we did in the old days. My hinny nearly froze off more than once having to sit on the churn while my Dad cranked it!

But oh talk about good!

Re: Ice Cream/Toppings

Fresh Rasberry Topping (great on vanilla ice cream with hot fudge sauce also)

1 cup fresh raspberries
1/4 cup sugar (use more or less as desired)

Gently crush fresh rasberries--add sugar--let sit awhile till berries "wheep".

Fabulous sauce!

We had a hand crank we were kids as well. But my parents made US crank it! At least until it got to be so frozen that we couldn't do it anymore. Then dad would take over.

We would go to my grandma's house on a Sunday afternoon in the winter. They would send us kids outside to get big huge bowls of clean snow. Why it had to be clean I never figured out since they were just gonna mix that rock salt into it. Ewww. Anyhow, Dad and Mom would start the ice cream freezing. And Grandma would pop popcorn in her big iron skillet. Shes the only person I ever knew who used a cast iron skillet for making popcorn, but she did! And she'd always leave the lid off until at least some of it had already started to pop. We'd wait just to see if it would pop out of the pan before she would put the lid on.

So then we'd have popcorn, homemade ice cream and sometimes Grandma would cut up some apples. And we'd all sit at her big kitchen table and play card games. Grandma LOVED to play Pepper, so we played alot of that. In later years, she liked UNO, so when I grew up we'd play that with her.

Those were some fun times!
