They know because God changes them completely and makes them new creatures in Christ. They don't have to be told their sins are forgiven- they know it. Afterwards, I tell them they should make a public confession of their new found faith in God by being baptized in water in the Name of Jesus Christ. They are encouraged to seek the Lord until He fills them with His free gift of the Holy Ghost as in Acts 2:4.
I don't present water/Spirit baptism as absolutely must do, necessities that "if you don't do it, you're gonna burn in hell"- I present water/Spirit baptism as incredible, God-given gifts to deepen ones walk with God.
No, I haven't used the "Sinners Prayer", though I have guided some who didn't know how to pray.

"UNTIL THEY KNOW" hmmm I appreciate your response but the quoted part I have some questions on. Does this coincide with
Acts 8? To know is obviously something beyond simple "feelings" as in this case "until they know" during repentance. A good weeping, though good brings about many changes in the mentality of people (which includes chemical change of the brain) who many times feel a change in opinion or change ala release of problems. This happens many times when burdens such as a death of a loved one grow without letting things go etc... In many cases has nothing to do with God at all just a felt pain or burden. Thus they feel a release of the situation etc... I know that those that do probably do truly repent but the aspect of changing from death to life off of repentance and sincere weeping don't fit the mentality or mental model of
Acts 8 and
Acts 19. Again I am not trying to be mean but I find this very subjective to the "feelings" of people "to know"!
