Re: UPC Culture

When I was younger I was surprised to find out that not every church traditionally used the phrase "pray through". Some things I just thought were universal.

Re: UPC Culture

"In church" = He's a believer in the UPC dogma and lifestyle.

"prayed through" is one my non-UPC friends don't understand either.

"this precious faith" = UPC dogma

"those of like precious faith" = those who agree with the speakers narrow slice of UPC theology.

"shouting" = I'm pretty sure this fairly unique to the UPC and its close cousins in the denominal acrononym alphabet cereal.

"the organization"= the UPC. Why do I think of The Sopranos when I hear this?

"the fellowship" = the UPC.

"with us" = In the UPC...."he's not with us" anymore means he's not UPC. That's usually proceeded by a furrowed brow and a slight shake of the head and is usually preceeded by "I just want you to pray" which is usually preceeded by "I'm not gossiping or anything, but.." The receiver of said gossip usually says "Has he gone Charasmatic?!" , to which the gossiper replies, "Even worse! He's REFORMED!!" . (that ones for my friend Dave. )

Re: UPC Culture

"back slidden" - to leave the individual Church you once attended/to change your opinion on ANY standard that the church held. Note: A CHURCH can be back slidden when it does this to the organization as well.

"the birthday song" - The UPC's answer to "Happy Birthday to you....", since the original is obviously carnal.

"fellowship" - Much more complicated in the UPC universe but assumed to mean "get together. hang around." by the rest of the world.

Re: UPC Culture

That someone who is not saved is "in the world". That never fails to get a laugh when you repeat it to someone "outside" "the church".

I had a new one said to me the other day on the forum, which personally, I could live a lifetime and never hear again, and that would be just dandy:

"you wouldn't know "?" (I think in my case it was logic) if it came up and backslid all over your face". Or something to that effect.

Charming, and completely incomprehensible.

Re: UPC Culture

Well, I have heard the term backslidden, which I was. So there was truth in that one.

Re: UPC Culture

I really wasn't talking about the "controversial" ones (fat chance, huh ). I was mainly just talking about whether there is a unique culture with unique lingo overall that we are connected to without even quite realizing it. The first time I read someone here say that somebody didn't believe fat meat was greasy, I almost fell out of my chair. I had no idea that that was a widespread saying.

Re: UPC Culture

You know what there is two ways to obtain a culture. By design of default. One can create a culture for a church or especially a movement that is vibrant and cutting edge and an actual Acts 2 church, which was very pregressive. Then one can create the opposite. Either way culture is created if one does not set forth to create a culture the movement settles into a form of culture where everyone makes up the rules as they go or the ones that make up the rules to so out of their own opinions.

By design, is the way it should be done cause the ones helping to create it can also insure that the culture is maintained. By default no one sets a certain cultre thus the movement takes on a culture of its own based on the opinions and wants of the people with in it. This is very dangerous when the best thing to say about a movements 'culture' is that there is not one or at best the one it has is very, very lacking. It is hard to kick against to pricks or change cultures when the lack of culture has been going on so long.
