I think the foundation does (should) begin at home. However, children watch everything and go through stages where they question everything. They also tend, at times, to see things very distinctly with little gray. So, while they may see dedication and devotion at home, they also see people in their church (and presumably they trust their youth leaders, Sunday school teachers, pastors) who hold a different view very strongly and who are very vocal about that view. Often, it becomes too difficult to decide who is right - and they can't both be right. And then the erosion of faith begins as children begin to start thinking in terms of "hypocrite" or "rebellious".
I know several adults who are not in ANY kind of church as a result of situations such as these. I know others (me included) who refuse to be a part of any Pentecostal church having gone through this as a kid.
