It seems that I may be completely out of place in this thread BUT THAT HAS NEVER STOPPED ME BEFORE! Can a conservative answer that question and respond to some of those contained IN this thread? I will assume the answer is "Yes"
Here goes....
Conservatives by and large often produce a VERY Negative response in me and I AM ONE! I think the most pronounced trait of many who are calling themselves or are called by others "Conservative" is a bullheaded approach to anything that they have been taught, or have been exposed to or (Heaven Help Us) "God has shown them" (How can you argue with THAT???)
No amount of scripture is neccessary for many of their positions, no amount of scripture can show them that they are incorrect in their position, and the amazing thing is that the more UNBIBLICAL some of their postions are the more ESSENTIAL to salvation they are held to be!
I remember being exposed and immersed to this horrible trait of so many in my very first youth camp as a new convert back in 1972.
A group of young men (15, 16, 17) were all gathered around outside after the mornig service and since none of us knew each other we were kind of standing around trying to discover (I THOUGHT) common themes we had with each other that might lead to friendships.
But here was the tack they began with..."Does YOUR Pastor preach against TV?" "yes" Yes" "Yes" "yes" around the circle. "WELL.... Does your pastor preach against Wedding Rings?" "Yes" "Yes""Yes" "Yes" "No" ...stunned silence.... well YOU'RE out! And then the next question..."Does your pastor preach against Christmas Trees?" "Yes" "Yes" "Yes" "No" Ooops YOU'RE OUT...."Does Your Pastor preach against Bowling?" "Yes" "yes" "No" Oh Oh...You're out~! "Does your Pastor preach against LIP gloss? "yes" "no" bye bye
And finally it was just the two of us left and I wanted so bad to ask a question but didnt know which one to ask since I was new but I was SURE there had to be SOMETHING that my pastor stood for that his didn't, the two of us felt so HOLY and now years later in retrospect I sicken myself thinking "I didn't come into Pentecost with that spirit, WHO built that in me????" I see that same spirit of fracturing over NOTHING played out again and again and again and know that the devil rejoices as HE knows a house divided against ITSELF can NOT stand! So yes in that respect I am HIGHLY troubled by the bordering on CRAZY man made things that we use to inflict this pain of seperation upon ourselves. ( Oh here's another little conservative by word that drives me right up the wall. Mention virtually any brother in a crowd of conservatives and almost invariably at some point one of them will draw you aside to warn you away from the brother with this statement..."He don't believe that fat meats greasy." )
I remember once a hilarious chain of events in the state of Louisiana... I was preaching for an ultra ULTRA U*L*T*R*A* conservative and he asked me who I was preaching for next. So I told him (This was not going to be an ultra ULTRA *U*L*T*R*A* Conservative just an ultra ULTRA) so he raises an eyebrow and says Brother so and so huh? You KNOW he don't believe that fat meats greasy" The next service I am at Brother ultra ULTRA and HE asks me where I am going next well the next guy was just an ultra so when I told him he said, "OOOOO, Brother he don't believe that fat meats greasy" So I go to the ultra to preach and after that I was going to preach for a (I shudder to admit it) a MODERATE...so at dinner after church that night the ultra asks where I am going next and when I tell him he clucks his tongue and says Brother I wouldn't if I were you, the man don't believe that fat meats greasy" Well any guesses what the "moderate" said about the NEXT guy I was supposed to preach for???? "He dont believe that fat meat's greasy!" I cracked up, and when he asked me why I said "Bro....THATS WHAT *THEY* ALL SAY ABOUT ** YOU**!!!!!"
I will answer some more of these questions later, this is getting WAY too long! But it sure is Cathartic!
