Did God Want You to Get That Mortgage?

This is an article from TIME about the forclosure situation and how it could be somewhat tied to the pentecostal movement. Voice your opinion. I kinda agree with it to a point.

Re: Did God Want You to Get That Mortgage?

Another point I would like to make is that many of our ministers I have talked to hate the 'Prosperity Gospel'. Some don't mind it and I would guess that they don't mind cause it lines their own pocket books. Part of the article has a quote in it here it is--quoting Anthea Butler, an expert in pentecostalism from University of Rochester, in NY state, "The pastor's not gonna say 'go down to Wachovia and get a loan' but I have heard, 'even if you have a poor credit rating God can still bless you — if you put some faith out there [that is, make a big donation to the church], you'll get that house, or that car or that apartment.'"

Another part of the article says this--"Although a type of Pentecostalism, Prosperity theology adds a distinctive layer of supernatural positive thinking. Adherents will reap rewards if they prove their faith to God by contributing heavily to their churches, remaining mentally and verbally upbeat, and concentrating on divine promises of worldly bounty supposedly strewn throughout the bible."

To me this is dead on in more than just money. This is a very accurate statement that came be used to describe lots of what we are taught. Once we are saved now we must prove to God our faith in Him by doing a number of things. Some of which dare I say most of which is not biblical.

That doesn't count unless they prayed for you to lose your job.

Whoa!

This article is great on a couple of fronts.

1) TIME magazine recognizes the influence of personal faith, though not in the best light;

2) The article helps to expose others to the subtle "bad religion" of the "Prosperity Gospel";

3) The article helps to expose that there are some good affects of the "Prosperity Gospel"-- which is not separate from The Gospel, when taught with balance;

4) The article ESTABLISHES that crooked brokers carry more of the blame for our current crisis-- a claim that has fallen on more deaf ears than those willing to hear.
