We also looked for rural property that we could grow a garden and maybe raise a few animals on. Rural because it is usually much cheaper and you can find something you can buy cash or pay off quickly. People are also more willing to owner finance for you.
It would be good if one could get a cheap dwelling on the land as well. At least there is an option should the need arise.
