To use myself as an example, I'm like millions of believers who speaks/prays in tongues at will. That is a manifestation of the gift of tongues, which we sometimes refer to our "prayer language". (In my case, this didnt come to me until a few years after I initially received the gift/baptism of the Spirit and spoke in tongues)
... But I have never given a "message" in tongues [with accompanying interpretation] as other people I know. That is also a separate manifestation of the gift. Paul addresses both of these in 1 Cor 14.

This is very hard to follow. It's the "Gift" of tongues when praying in tongues... but not the gift when "speaking in tongues" is evidence...
Don't get me wrong. I totally understand what France is saying through my UPC OP lens... but when I take those off I don't get it.
It seems like we are saying the "Gift of tongues" is a trinity. They receive the Gift of tongues - in one manifestation when the Holy Spirit comes, another gift of tongues may or may not come to be used in prayer language. Yet a third manifestation may or may not come which is meant to be interpreted.
Sorry but this seems bogus. It's a way for the whole church to be engulfed in tongue speaking, while still yet claiming to abide by the instruction of Paul to the Corinthians. After all, that was tongues in modus operandi Alpha not Beta or Gamma so it's fine!

When we are originally filled with the gift of the Holy Ghost, (Acts) we are receiving the GIVER of spiritual gifts as in Corinthians. We will never receive the gifts of the Spirit until we first receive the Spirit (GOD) who gives the gifts. HE gives the gifts as HE sees fit.
And you will receive POWER after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you. GOD is not likely going to put POWER "tools" into the hands of newborns.

Re: Pitfalls in Solely Relying on Acts for doctrin
One might be able to borrow insights on other portions of Scripture from Evangelicals, however, they must be carefully scrutinized. Further, one must never rely on them for anything related to doctrine. Their approach to doctrine is tainted by their reliance on the creeds and foundational doctrines of the Catholic Church, namely the doctrine of the Trinity which was codified as church doctrine in the 300s, and which can be seen to be opposed throughout history.

Re: Pitfalls in Solely Relying on Acts for doctrin
Meh. Acts, complete with it's "experiencial hermeneutic" still seems IMO to be a better source of doctrine to me than the Epistles which are mostly Paul explaining to the infant church what happened to them in Acts and how to respond to it/what it signified. The Epistles are wholly meaningless in theological terms to anyone who had not experienced what happened in Acts. Without Acts, there is no need of any Epistles.
