Gen11:1_ Now the whole earth had one language and one speech.
Gen11:6- ....people are one and they all have one language,...
It appears to me that there were many languages that people had( maybe for speaking to their own kind), and there was one common language that everyone knew(like English today),and God "removed" that one language so noone could understand another except of his own language so people of the same languge migrated away?

God told them to scatter and fill the earth.
They didn't scatter.
Nimrod was preaching a false religion and was accepted by many.
They said, let's build a tower so we don't get scattered.
When God confounded the languages, folks who understood each other hung out together and moved on.
The Nimrod religion was carried to the whole world.
That's why there are similarities among different religions
such as "holy water," mother and child worship, spring festivals, winter solstice festivals, etc.
