Interestingly enough, Dante's inferno is the only biblical evidence there is to refer to.

In the holy pages of Dante's Inferno, almost all preachers of all denominations preach from them, you will will find all the truths of this fiction revealed.

In the Bible though, you won't find it.

This story predated Jesus' birth by about 200 years.

I would appreciate having the documentation on that. I heard that said some years ago but without any supporting evidence.

Re: Hell In Question

Hello tdc,
My understanding is just my own so take it as such. I didn't read those links that were posted so I don't know what is said there. I tried to on one but it was too much for me right now.
Revelations 20:14 - And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Here seems to be a distinction between hell and the lake of fire. I kind of view hell as a holding cell for the unsaved after death. At the final judgment, that holding cell will be cast into the final 'unresting place'. As to what the 'lake of fire' is, as in if it is actual fire that burns for eternity, I don't know.

Personally, I think that at death most people go to 'sleep'. To the saved it is restful but to the unsaved it is not (think nightmares).

Whichever way the lake of fire is I think the worst part of it will the eternal separation from God.

Those are my thoughts at least. Maybe they'll help...

God bless

I posted it on another thread, I look it back up for you.

One book is "The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah" by Alfred Edersheim
http://www.jesus.org.uk/vault/librar...jesus_vol2.pdf
Chapter 18, Page 128.

I have to look up the other.

Thanks for the post inquisitiveguy.

I too, for the time being, hold the idea that hell simply refers to an eternity without God. As we well know, in Jesus is life eternal, and outside of Him is death. So as of now, it makes sense (imo) to say that eternal death is a result of separation from God, and is a fit description of hell.

It seems that this author is not saying the story predates his telling but certain elements of the story predate, such is the phrase "Abraham's Bossom"

Re: Hell In Question

I believe it is a parable, but does not diminish the thought that hell is a real spiritual place outside the physical universe, in the spiritual realm, where souls will suffer.

The parable is primarily about legalism and the Pharisees, who were the rich man, enjoyed the "wealth" of esteem of men. Lazarus was the believer who lacked such esteem since he wanted the esteem of God.

Luke 16:14-20 KJV And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him. (15) And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. (16) The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. (17) And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail. (18) Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery. (19) There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: (20) And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,

I believe a place of torment is certainly real.

Christ never made parables out of fantasies, but realities. There were actual seeds and sowers. Even so, there is an actual hell.

Do you believe folks in hell will burn for ever and ever and ever ....
