On Hacking

No site is 100% safe from this happening. All anyone can do is make sure they have current backups and that their scripts are up to date.

All a host can do is ensure that firewalls and security tools are in place and all but the essential ports are blocked.

I doubt that JP or their host was to blame. It is just something that happens.

This is a real "but for the grace of God there go I" thing That COULD HAPPEN HERE!

IF you have a web site here is my advice:
  • Keep local backups. On server backups are nice, but if the server fails catastrophically, the data center burns to the ground, gets nuked, earthquaked or hurricaned, or if a hacker deletes it all...you are up a creek. Keep local backup or contract off-site storage.
  • Keep scripts up 2 date. Exploits in forum software and content management systems are the biggest target for script kiddies, defacers and email phishers.
This way you at least are protected if something wicked your way comes.

I guess the crux of the matter and a better test of fellowship would be, not, “Do you have a television in your home?” but, “Do you watch television programming?”

And, for the record, I do.

And, I respect those who don’t, but not those who say they don’t and do, or those who say they don’t and cuddle up with their computer and Fox News every night.
Very good point, and one that makes sense.

I had a 1985, and it was the fastest production machine in 1985. The V-Max is very realible, and you will find that it will hold its value (as long as you don't dump it). Make sure that you look under the rear fender to see if the current owner has tried to burn out (smoke) the rear wheel. By looking under the rear fender you can see rubber stuck to the fender's underside. If that is the case, then you might want to reconsider making the purchase. Check for oil seepage around the rear cylinder heads, that is another indicator of owner abuse. Listen for any top end noise, and make sure the V-Max shifts through all gears smoothly. Yamaha V-Max transmissions should not clunk or be hard shifting, that only indicates that you will have future issues.

If you buy a V-Max avoid installing nitrous bottle, the motorcycle doesn't need it, and you would be better served by installing an after market pipe. Make sure you feel comfortable on the machine and that while in the seated position you are flat footed. V-Max center of gravity is high, and you need to feel comfortable when seated and stopping. Riding is one thing, but stopping is another.

Enjoy the ride.

OK...
But why is it that we don't see prominent sites like cnn.com and drudgereport.com going down like this?

What do they do that others dont?

a huge staff constantly on guard, sites that span dozens of servers dedicated to that one particular site.

Most "normal" sites are on a server that is "shared" with, in some cases, 4 or 5000 other sites, depending on how heavily the host over sells.

With that density it is harder for the host to ensure that every script is secure.

The big sites also aren't targets for "script kiddies" which is what most defacers are. JP was probably brought down by a teenager with no girlfriend and a hobby. These aren't "real" hackers. They just get exploit tools from underground sites and run them automatically, something anyone with a computer and a little bit of computer knowledge can do. It is a score keeping thing with them. Usually all they do is wreck the front page.

ok.
what can a small site owner do to protect himself from script kiddies?

also would it be helpful and or practical for a site owner to have the site mirrored in 2 or 3 different locations on different servers? (as in 123.com, 123.net and 123.org?)
