There are currently two major geologic zones in the continental US where the crust is pulling a part something like the Mid Atlantic Ridge. These two zones are located in the Great Basin area of Neveada and Utah and in the region around New Madrid, Mo, and Ohio River Valley. The article appears to point to the latter one.
There are places in the Great Basin where the crust is the thinnest anywhere on the planet.
Branham's "earthquake" prediction seems to have been based upon an early 20th century understanding (misunderstandin) of the geology of the Western United States. If he were alive today he would no doubt want to update the "California Island" scenario and instead speak of a Yellowstone volcano eruption, which is not only more likely - but appears to be inevitable.
