I don't know. I haven't read it without the "the". Where are you getting the translation?
Also, from the whole text it seems a rather minor detail, IMO. In other words, it reads the same to me with or without the "the" or "a".
Probably with the "a" it solidifies the point, but I don't think it's a necessary point to argue.
