Simple. Because they were told it.

A person can be made to think that ANY random bible verse means anything the person teaches, says it does -with enough repetition, forcefulness, and personality.

This is why it is SO important to occasionally read it while deliberately pretending that you are reading it for the first time with NO prior knowledge.
