The Last Lecture

Has anyone read "The Last Lecture" by the late Randy Pausch? Someone at church loaned it to me and I'm just about done with it. It's thoughts about childhood dreams written by a man dying of pancreatic cancer (who died this past July). It's pretty fascinating!

Re: The Last Lecture

Sherri,

Have you watched any of his "Last lecture" online like at youtube? It was that speech that went viral and made him famous before he died. That speech is why he ended up doing the book.

JJ Abrams the director of the new Star Trek movie coming out in May heard that in the speech he mentioned being a big Star Trek fan so JJ had him fly out to LA and gave him a bit part with a line or two as a crew member of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek. It is a shame he did not live to see himself onscreen.

It was so sad because he was so young, handsome and vibrant. Had a beautiful wife and kids and seemed to be one of those people who was enjoying life to the fullest.

The part of his speech I saw he did not mention religion. I sure hope he had given his life to Christ.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

He grew up Presbyterian, but there's not much in his book that is "spiritual". He has a lot of good moral lessons in the book, but nothing about a walk with God. Like you, I hope that he found that before he died.

I haven't seen any of it on youtube, but I will look.

No. However he was a pretty inspirational guy in his circumstances. One of those cases where we can learn some things from someone who does not share our faith.

Re: The Last Lecture

I read the book after seeing his interviews with Diane Sawyer. He faced death with such grace and courage. The book has some very good life lessons.

Re: The Last Lecture

I just finished the book. He felt very lucky to be able to say the things he wanted to say to his family and friends, knowing that he was dying. He felt fortunate that he was dying this way, rather than in a wreck or having a heart attack. He was able to prepare himself and everyone that he loved for facing the future.

I do wish I could have seen more of a relationship with God in his story though. He said that religion was very personal to him, and evidently did have a minister. But he doesn't say much else about it.
