Re: 5% Mandatory Offering Required on top of 10% T

Where this extra 5% most likely came from is Leviticus 27:31 And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes , he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof.

Of course, this has nothing to do with "an offering" above the required tithes. However, I recommend reading from Leviticus 27:24-33. Now, in order to get a better understanding of this passage and how it should be implemented in one's life, I would suggest seeking out the teaching of an established rabbi. That is, of course, for those ministers who really believe in following the law of tithing, and are willing to implement and live by all ten of the tithing ordinances.

If not, then go ahead and demonstrate to the assembly how to pick and choose which laws, ordinances, and statutes one wishes to follow and which ones you will not follow. Even so, please pay careful attention to the rules of selection that you have created, so that the entire congregation can also follow your example concerning law selection. Also, one will have to be very clear in these kinds of matters in order to justify one's self before God when He asks, "What have you done with my laws, that you should sit in judgment of them?"

Most people fail to look past the perceived immediate benefit they see in imposing some laws and dismissing others. Few, if any, actually realize that when one manipulates the word/laws of God, they are attempting to recreate God after their own image and in their own likeness. They may even love this god of theirs, but they certainly don't fear him.

HaShaliach pointed out the passage in Leviticus that a lot of folks use for the "late tithe" payment thing. An additional "tax" of 20% or a fifth was to be added. The "double" you heard was either a misunderstanding or an attempt at extortion.

The "5%" came from the "half shekel" tax that was to be paid once a year by all Israelites for the maintenance of the House of God. It's all a contrivance aimed at securing increased funding for churches willing to put up with it.

Someone once said, "I don't give a tenth. Some times I give more than a tenth. Some times I give a twentieth, or maybe even a thirtieth."

Has that nice gentleman ever preached a sermon that did NOT begin with the "B" word?

Exd 30:14 Every one that passeth among them that are numbered, from twenty years old and above, shall give an offering unto the LORD.

Exd 30:15 The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when [they] give an offering unto the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls.

He stated that the shekel of the sanctuary represented the tithe, and so therefore half of the tithe (an half shekel) should be given as an offering.
Well, that would probably increase his offerings!!

Re: 5% Mandatory Offering Required on top of 10% T

Brother Scott - where have you been hiding this minister? I have not read/listened to much of his "teaching", but from what I have read, he deserves at lest a fair hearing! Most saints of God (that includes ministers) love to judge everyone else, but not ourselves. At lease Dr. Jones challenges everyone, to challenge him and everyone else on their teachings (doctrines).

To that I would add what I have always advocated, "Don't forget to challenge ourselves in what it is we think, believe, and teach! That is, self examination."
