I dont oppose all musich that isnt "church music".

But the notion that one can be spiritually strong and therefore enjoy music that you confess might be damaging to a weaker saint baffels me as to why the "stronger" would WANT to do something like that!

I think there is a lot of secular music out there that any saint of God would find perfectly acceptable.

I do agree that a strong Christian can "handle" some things that would challenge a new saint or a weak saint. Surely those things exist in our daily lives.

but when you have something as wrong as Holy Roller Novacane, I cannot for the life of me understand how a person of any serious faith, either strong or weak or new or seasoned would WANT to listen to it!

That doesnt mean I wish bad things for the Kings. In factI stand by my statement. I wish them well. They have been wrong by "us" for certain.

I pray they find their way thru the fog and back to a real relationship with God.... and this might shock you, but I dont think that means they would need to stop being secular rockers....

but come one bro.... you can really listen to that kind of thing and it not have an effect on you?
It is a personal decision to listen to this band or not. I don't see anything particularly morally wrong with the band. I know they are sinners and I don't expect to get God edifying lyrics from them. However, their talent and ability to play music is still a glory to God even if they are not children of God. I can listen and marvel at the music and not really listen to the lyrics and actually be uplifted because of these guys ability that God has given them.

I don't see anything wrong with "Holy Roller Novacane" as a title to a song. "Holy Roller" is not a sacred term to me.

What is sin for me might not be sin to my brother. Many of our struggles come from things that are morally neutral.

I can't listen to talk radio anymore. I stopped listening after the '04 election. It stresses me out too much and makes me too upset. I can't listen to Limbaugh or Hannity just because they really do incite anger towards the government. I can't even listen to local talk shows because it's so negative and constantly reminds what a mess we're in.

Sorry, but I find that more taxing on my spirit than I do listening to some secular music.

JT, we agree on a lot of things around here. And I am not one who opposes all secular music out of hand.

However, I am finding your arugments in this tread hard to follow....

I listen to 90% secular music, and I have no interest in debating it's merits, or any of that...

But just for informational purposes I thought I would share that the song "Holy Roller Novocaine" is actually about a spiritual leader misusing his authority to manipulate those underneath him into sexual situations. So the lyrics are supposed to disturbing.

Someone rightly pointed out earlier that artistic expression is supposed to evoke emotions. I add that they are not always positive emotions.

good post....very true....but most don't take the time to understand why a song came to be.

but alas...you are a heretic that reads Tolkien.

well if it is an editorial on a spiritual leader abusing their power that is one thing.

reading the words of the song, it seemed "first person" to me.

anyone who undertands OPs knows there is deeper meaning to that line "uncover your head"
