Re: Do You People Have ANY Standards?

and here we go with a hundred definitons of what is apostolic.

and yes I am a disciple, a follower of Christ.

I do not claim to be what some of ya all caLL apostolic nor do I describe my self as pentecostal, although I often speak with tongues in private prayer.

I am a Christian, period.

Re: Do You People Have ANY Standards?

I'm sorry, but I question those with personal convictions. What I mean is that what they mention as their "personal convictions" are preached frequently from pulpits where they attend church. I believe that sometimes what they call "convictions" are just acceptance of standards that are preached as salvational.

To me, a "personal conviction" wouldn't be something that is hammered from the pulpit of their church. For instance, a personal conviction would be refraining from wearing the color blue, eating fish, or wearing anything made with cotton, playing Ping Pong, etc.

What most people call personal convictions are taught to them. They are merely parroting what their pastor or ex-pastor preaches. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!)

An opinion is something you hold.
A conviction is something that holds you.

Very interesting!

What some call convictions are mere opinions. People will change opinions, but never a conviction. I've seen too many "convictions" change with time and circumstance.

I would not say convictions never change - I believe some of mine have.

Nevertheless the point is made - convictions are not flippant things that change with whim or church memberships...

What about the claim that some UC's make that "the pastors convictions are the church's convictions".

Bad claim.

True, though, in most ultra-con churches.

Re: Do You People Have ANY Standards?

why do people preach their personal convictions to other people? personal conviction is for them and them only.. look at the rich young ruler.. when he asked Jesus what he needed to do.. Jesus saw his condition.. he had a problem with money.. jesus told him what he needed to do. Know if you and I were to ask the rich young ruler what must we do to be saved.. I highly doubt he would tell us to sell everything we have. There are standards in the bible, you cant take some, and leave some. Its there in the word. I have no business putting my personal convictions on somebody else because they are not like me.
