A lot of what manifests itself as mental distress is caused by a physical issue. Blood sugar issues, hormonal imbalances... any number of physical ailments can cause you to feel depressed and hopeless. No amount of praying (aside from divine healing) is going to take care of your blood sugar issue. You need to take care of the PROBLEM.
Also, when you are ill, tired and depressed, it can be very difficult to pray. Sometimes we just have to admit that we need help. Or that our neighbor needs genuine help, not just 'a good praying through'.

I'm still trying to figure out what it means to "pray through". I should start a thread.

Interesting subject. I learned at an early age NOT to let others see me pray. When I was having genuine problems, anyone seeing me pray would assume that everything was taken care of, "OK, next!", and move on. But nothing WAS "taken care of" or solved.

So if Psychology and psychiatry have their foundations squarely based in the philosophies of humanism, why do you recommend people visit them? |

I'm a Junior at Our Lady of the Lake University. 4.0 gpa
Studying to become a voice therapist. Just finished Human Anatomy and Physiology this summer. Minoring in Psychology. I'm going for a MA. So I'm no "expert." But I'm no dummy either, thank you very much.
I disagree with many of the methods used by some founders of psychological counseling and medical treatment - for instance Freud was a "nutcase" in his own right and there was a guy who used to travel the country gouging people in the brain using ice picks as a means to "lobotomize" patients who displayed socially inappropriate behavior. People would take their misbehaving kids to him and viola! They were perfectly catatonic...never a minute's problem after that.
On the other hand, SOME of the counseling methods are highly beneficial and should not be thrown out with the bath water.

It's very likely. Men are less prone by nature to want to admit weakness, I think.
(Like asking for directions when they're lost.  )
