It
is an interesting thought...
Through the centuries walls were built for protection, keeping invaders out.
An example of this is the Great Wall in China. It was never intended that the Wall be a monument for tourists, or even as a testimony of the ingenuity of the people.
It was built strictly for protection.
In the OT, someone...Moses, Aaron, or Joshua (my mind is failing here) built a fence as protection for the people.
Nothing wrong with that, IMHO...
The problem with wall building as pertains to Christianity and the Church, however, is that the reasons for doing so are vast.
Some build to shield the people from the world and it's system, or what they perceive to be 'the world'.
Others build out of arrogance. They are self-sufficient, in need of no one else but "us four and no more."
A pastor I used to know stopped the bus ministry at his church because, "We don't need all of 'that' here." Just what is 'that'?! Would that be the people who need the message he had to share?!
Walls are built to keep people inside, but to what end?!
Walls are also built to keep people outside, but for what purpose?!
Churches should never be a moument to daddy's bygone legacy, or a testimony to the contractors and $$ it took to build it.
Our churches should be places of refuge from despair...soul saving stations of mercy and rest.
Have guidelines of protection, but remember that the same wall fending off evil can be a prison if not balanced with compassion.
Some of this is just beyond my pea-brain of thinking...
