Apostolic is defined on AFF as:

  1. There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
  2. The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
  5. That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
  6. The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

Re: Would You Put Timmy On Your Church Board?

In all seriousness, I've known churches that wouldn't let you clean the church if you didn't claim the Holy Ghost. I never understood the reason for this. I can understand not giving someone the keys to the building, but why not team them with a responsible person that will work beside them and disciple them, if they honestly volunteer to help?

You've been here twice the amount of time and only had half the thoughts. What does that say?

Take it easy on Singletary. He's one of your Christian brothers, you know!

Re: Would You Put Timmy On Your Church Board?

A properly functioning board needs a variety of perspectives and broad expertise. Timmy would probably bring a unique point of view and would, no doubt, have a great deal to offer. If the board is functioning as it should, it should not be made of "we all think alike, we all vote alike." Too many church boards function like too many churches - people in a clique running all aspects and knowing they can count on everyone saying yea or nay, as directed. Many boards have "risen to the level of their incompetence." So, if I had a church board, and I don't (probably to the relief of many), I would certainly want to meet with Timmy. We could decide together if it was a good thing.

I like Timmy. He's kind, gentle, understanding, non-confrontational, knows the bible very well, dependable, and consistent. Recently, I had a personal crisis that could have been devastating, and Timmy was one of the first I contacted. I didn't ask him to pray but I said, "If you ever would, I could sure use it." I trust him.

He also has a great understanding of the church and how it operates. He sees the power of community and has some great perspectives of the redemptive potential of the church. I haven't asked what he does for a living but I get the impression his business sense is very good.

So I once told Timmy I wish he lived here in my area and would love to have him in our church (we openly embrace those who don't wear the label of "Christian") and if he did I'd have him on our church board.

I mentioned it in another thread today and that idea didn't exactly go over very well.

So....what do you think. Would you have him on your church board considering the qualities I mentioned?
I'd trust have "Timmy" to give excellent input into anything that I could conceive myself as doing or being involved with, so sure. Put him on the "board."

It's probably better than the "plank" he's accustomed to walking.
