Being in the Fireplace/Chimney biz, I have a few questions if you care to answer. Was this a Prefabricated fireplace and chimney, or a brick masonry structure? Was there a recent flue fire?

It was Prefabricated I think. I can take photos of that Stephen, it is still sitting in my son's truck. No previous fire, and this was the last season we planned on using it. It was so old.

THANK GOD You are OK. That is the main thing.
The prefab fireplaces will wear like any other appliance and need replacement after about 30 years - much sooner if damaged or installed improperly. I have seen two burn locally this year so far.

That is about how old this fireplace was. And there were some gaps you couldn't see without tearing out the walls, like we had to do. It is raining today so no photos of it, maybe later.
Yes, we are very grateful we are all OK. 30 minutes to an hour later we would have been sleeping.
