What he is doing is sort of a chess tactic. One chess defense is called the Petrov Defense. Essentially for the first several moves of the opening game the defense makes the same moves as the offense (white). Though now for BD this is an endgame strategy..It's really just more obfuscation on his part because he never had a strong position to begin with.
