The Apaches were called in to provide support for for US ground forces who were taking fire from the area. At one point one of the Apache crew members calls out over the radio that he is being shot at (seemed to be a unit other than the one whose camera we were looking through).
As far as, "Were these bona fide terrorists..." At least one of them clearly had an RPG. Several others were armed with AK-47s. They were not Iraqi police or national army troops. "Civilians" don't carry RPGs and AK-47s nor do they engage American forces in gun fights. So, I'd say "Yeah. They're bad guys."
And then to have the "reporters" mingling with the armed men and slinging something over their shoulders, you'd have to see the how they were "misidentified."
Still, no one seemed to blame the terrorists when journalists embedded with U.S. forces were injured or killed. And, to call these guys "embeds" with the terrorists is being kind. They appeared to be collaborators.
