that "he and President Obama aren't afforded the same tolerance of missteps as whites are because of their race."
That goes two ways. As some African Americans say, "I have to work twice as hard because people think I got this job only because of my race" or "I have to keep my yard twice as nice looking to avoid people saying 'I told you so' when I moved into the neighborhood." That's one way African Americans are held to a different standards than white people.
Another way they are held to a different standard is through the set asides and affirmative action. This is just the opposite. I'll give some examples.
--Some years ago I was a foreman for a company and we had to hire an additional person. I interviewed a few people and told a higher manager who I wanted to hire. He over rode me with, "I want to see a black person in that job" so I had to hire someone who would not have been my first choice.
--A few years later when I was working at GE, a friend called me and told me he had a job opening up in his area and would be hiring someone. He told me he would get "a star if he hired an African American" and "two stars if he hired an African American female." I was not offered the job. Instead it went to an African American man that I had worked with and I felt like he was not as qualified as I.
--A young man I knew was looking at a listing and description of some positions that were open at a large company here in the Cincinnati area. These were entry level positions with training for higher level positions. The man there was very plain spoken and said, "Some pretty good jobs there, aren't there? You don't qualify." When he young man asked why, he replied, "You're the wrong color. These are for minorities."
