I think these are states of being ("BE-attitudes") that we cannot make ourselves "be". These are things the Spirit of God works into us. But that is not to say we cannot seek God to cause us to become these. In fact, that is the reason I believe Jesus mentioned them. We are to seek God to cause us to become these types of people after recognizing that God desires this in us.
I think Christ spoke of this in one of the beattitudes... Mt 5:6* Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
I guess what I'm questioning in my mind is the "attitudes" of some who post as to their "meekness" and whether it is important or not that they be meek. And "how important" is it?
The only time I can recall that Christ acted in what might be considered a "less than meek" manner was the over turning of the money changers tables in the Temple.

Very good points!

Which, to me, illustrates that sometimes a little "righteous indignation" is in order.
Interesting that the most harsh words and actions from Jesus were meted out to the religious people.
Also, I think we can speak a little more plainly and bluntly amongst ourselves than we do with sinners or strangers.

Sounds good. Heard it all my life. But this has always been a made-up slogan for some to pardon and justify their own struggles with meakness. I struggle with it, but I certainly wouldn't justify it by calling it weakness.
