Re: Why Acts 2:38?

Blume I think I just realized how baptism could be so important to the early church and yet not be salvational.

Baptism as a post salvational work wasn't done in order to obtain or even keep salvation. I think the early church viewed baptism as the first important work a new believer could do for the gospel that saved him. The act of new believers being baptized into Christ may have been just as important to the spread of Christianity as the preaching and miracles. Thus, to the church, baptism was evangelism and to the individual, baptism was the first work for Christ that they were doing in their new life as a believer. Since baptism was the first work for Christ they did then it would definently give them a good conscience toward God.

1Pe 3:21 "The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us..." KJV

1 Peter 3:21 "and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also.." (NIV)

1 Peter 3:21 "Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you.." (NASB)

I Peter 3:21 "Noah built his ship, only a few were saved then, eight to be exact—saved from the water by the water. The waters of baptism do that for you,..." (The Message)

1 Peter 3:21 "And baptism, which is a figure [of their deliverance], does now also save you..."(Amplified)

1 Peter 3:21 "And that water is a picture of baptism, which now saves you,..." (NLT)

1 Peter 3:21 "Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you..." (ESV)

1 Peter 3:21 "Those flood waters were like baptism that now saves you..." (CEV)

1 Peter 3:21 "There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism..." (NKJV)

Somehow, I keep thinking that baptism is salvational. I just cannot understand why I think that!!!

Romans 8 makes it clear that Cornelius was saved before his baptism. So the question we have now moved on to is how could the apostles and new converts be so adament about baptism if it was not salvational. I think my last post gave the beginning of an answer to that question.

Amen, there are simply too many verses you would have to ignore to think that baptism wasn't a necessary part of salvation.

John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Those verses alone should make us very leary of giving anyone the impression that they could still be saved without being baptized in Jesus name.

Romans 8, VERSE ONE: "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

He is talking to people who are already saved. They also have been spirit filled.

Side note: I don't believe in OSAS. We must continue in the faith to be saved at the end of the day. (Acts 14:22; Colossians 1:23; I Timothy 2:15)

Amen, OSAS can easily be shown to be unscriptural.

Another point is that we must "obey" the gospel (the death, burial, resurrection of Jesus Christ) and we obey the burial part of the gospel by being baptized in Jesus name.

Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism...

2 Thessalonians 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them... that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ

I cannot see baptism as a work for Christ. Peter said it saves by the resurrection of Christ, and Jesus said belief and baptism saves.

Peter was a conservative Apostolic, maybe even a member of the WPF. And that is why he preached Acts 2:38. You have to remember Peter did not attend bible school, meaning that he didn't know much like some of us 1 steppers.

Finally, an answer that makes sense.

All is right with the world again.
