Coexistent and Coeternal

How do you all feel about these terms? I think that these terms totally make sense. Here is what I mean. Jesus was on earth and He was God in heaven, right? So He was Coexistent with Himself. In eternity there is one throne with one person on it, God reignig supreme. However isn't Jesus resident in God? We call on Jesus, but when we do aren't we reallt calling on God, but the nature of Jesus the Saviour and healer? I believe that we do so I see God and Jesus and being Coeternal because the nature of both God and Jesus both exist all at once in the same "Body". Many people think us Oneness folk are modalist and say the we believe that God stop existing while Jesus was on earth, which is false. So why the big shake up over these terms?

What do you all think?

Re: Coexistent and Coeternal

It's theology. After spending years/decades reading theology (including reading theology for fun while in law school, theology makes my head swim.

Question: would Jesus or the earliest members of His ekklesia have used those terms?

Apostolic is defined on AFF as:

  1. There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
  2. The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
  5. That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
  6. The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

No, God was God in heaven, Jesus was the Son of God, not God.

So He was Coexistent with Himself.
He was in relationship with His, and Mary's, Father and God. Jesus wasn't God.

God is reigning supreme, no doubt. Jesus is in His throne with Him, but there are two 'thrones' in heaven.....so you're half right.

Rev 3:21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

However isn't Jesus resident in God?
God was in Jesus, Jesus was in God. They're two separate and distinct entities which exist in each other.

When we call upon Jesus, we're calling upon the separate and distinct mediator between God and man. It has nothing to do with 'natures'. They're separate and distinct entities interacting with each other.

God and Jesus exist as one but as I've pointed out many times in another thread, Jesus proceeded from God, God did not proceed from Jesus. God would exist without Jesus, but Jesus would not exist without God.

I think oneness folk cannot explain the separation, distinction, interaction and existence of God and Jesus without going into strange extra biblical terminology and concepts. I've seen everything from oneness folk posting that a 'human nature' died on the cross to Jesus being His own Father.

Weird stuff, not scriptural to be sure.

Neither is "coequal," "coeternal" or pretty much all the theology in the Nicene and (!!especially!!) Athanasian creeds.

Re: Coexistent and Coeternal

The MAN Christ Jesus was begotten not eternal, the one Divine Spirit of God that was IN the man Christ Jesus was and is eternal.

When you say Jesus was not God, do you mean that He was not the Father, or that He was not divine?
